Parents Unite! The Ultimate Boredom Buster is Here

Bust that Boredom with Indoor Games

Attention Parents!  Winter break is upon us, and I know the last thing you want to hear from the kids while they are home from school are those two dreaded words that have the magical ability to muster up a hearty helping of frustration and irritation — “I’m bored.”  Look around you, you may say to your children.  Do you see all of the toys, books, and other various activities that virtually crowd out everything else in the house?  How can you possibly be bored?  This is the kids’ cue for dramatic eye-rolling.

Not this year!  This is the year when every kid in the family can find something fun to do, and here’s the best part…it won’t cost much money and requires very little space, both of which are already at a premium for most families.  My favorite new fun family you-have-no-reason-now-to-say-you-are-bored purchase is the Hat Trick 4ft Air Hockey Table.   There truly is something for everyone. Personally, I love that my kids don’t come away from this table with a blank, mindless stare so often accompanied by screen-time activities.

Banish boredom!  Yes, it can be done.  Let them soak in it for a while, and I guarantee they’ll eventually head to the game table for some rip-roaring, boredom-busting good times.

Extreme Sports Locations Around the World

In today’s news, Rivals.com and Yahoo! Sports features an article about the top 10 most unusual sports venues ever. There are definitely some strange ones! For instance, Andre Agassi and Roger Federer playing a tennis match at Burj Al Arab hotel – 700 ft about the ground on a helicopter landing pad? The thought alone makes me dizzy! This venue, with only a thin net below for safety, is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The article also mentions college basketball games played on aircraft carriers, squash matches played in clear boxes at Grand Central Station, and golf played on a glacier. These interesting venues add a whole new aspect to the games that players already love and offer a most unique experience.

While you might not be playing tennis on a helipad anytime soon (unless you plan on making a trip to Dubai), you can bring the thrill of your favorite game to your own arena – your home! Indoor game tables provide a great family activity or a chance to unwind with friends. Table tennis, air hockey, poker, foosball, pool, darts, and even basketball can all be enjoyed in the warmth and comfort of your home. Create a fun, friendly, and competitive atmosphere at home – no extreme location required! They also make wonderful Christmas gifts!

TV and Film Technology of the Past Brought to Life!

It’s amazing how technology grows. Gadgets and gizmos that were once used in movies and television shows to thrust views into a high-tech and unimaginable future are now, only a few decades later, a reality. Many products around your home would have seemed like science fiction to your parents and grandparents generations. Below is a fun list of products that have gone from futuristic to must-haves!

  • Back to The Future – Many products in the BTTF franchise have been produced and some are even common in today’s society. TV video phones and conferences were featured, as were holographic tvs. Companies around the world regularly use video conferencing and Skype is quickly catching on with people around the world. IMAX and 3D movies are common and available in most areas. Even Marty’s self-lacing sneakers are now being produced (Nike Hyperdunks)!
  • The Jetsons – The Jetsons are one of the best examples of tv foreshadowing modern technology. The Jetson’s home of the future is quickly becoming the home of today. Fake tanning was introduced on the show almost a decade before the first tanning bed was invented. A wealthy business man tans in his luxurious bed with artificial sun options that include “Miami, Honolulu, and Riviera”.  Robotic vacuum cleaners were frequently featured on the show and are now widely available as hands-free options to traditional house work. Other once futuristic fantasies around the home, such as motorized window shades that rise and lower at the touch of a button and robotic lawn mowers that take the work out of lawn maintenance, are Jetson-esque.
  • Jet Packs – Featured in The Jetson’s, The Rocketeer, and several other movies and tv programs, a jet pack that allows a person to fly through the air is slowly becoming a reality. Several companies and individuals around the world are working to produce an efficient jet pack. While the technology is still in its infancy, it is happening and jet packs are working around the world.

What products or technologies have you seen in recent film and television that you look forward to seeing in the future?

3 Easy and Affordable Ways to Breathe Life into Blah Rooms

It seems inevitable that when funds are tight, the desire to redecorate overcomes me like a wildfire out of control.  Right now, my focus is on the dining room.  The dining room table and chairs are older than my marriage, but they’re still in fairly decent shape.  While I would love to replace them with a newer, sturdier dining set that complements my current tastes, which have changed over the years, I simply can’t afford the expense right now.  So, how does one breathe new life into a tired-looking room without spending the kind of money that would make a thrifty spouse (like mine) pass out?

Here are three easy and inexpensive changes most homeowners can make to spruce up any room:

  • Paint — While it may sound cliché, a fresh coat of paint really does help a “blah” room become a “wow” room.  Don’t be afraid of bold colors, either, especially in a dining room, bathroom, or guest room.  Colors with a little punch to them can add a lot of character to existing decor.
  • Plants — Whether real or fake, plants in decorative pots or baskets fill empty space and bring the natural beauty of the outdoors to indoor rooms.  Plants offer visual interest, and they solve a number of decorating challenges.  Not sure what to put on that high shelf or awkward ledge?  Can’t think of what to use for a centerpiece on the dining room table?  Plants will often do the trick.
  • Area rugs — Placing an area rug in a dining room, sitting area, bedroom, or hallway can make an enormous difference in the look of the room.  Area rugs can be subtle or bold in color and design.  Either way, they provide a decorative theme in a room, define a space more effectively than furniture alone, and help to dress up the decor that is already there.
    Outdoor Rugs
In a dining room and in other high-traffic, mess-prone areas, the best choice for an area rug is an outdoor rug.  Today’s outdoor rugs come in just as many color options and designs as indoor area rugs.  The difference is that outdoor rugs are exceptionally durable and can be very easily cleaned.  Small spots can be removed with mild soap and warm water, but outdoor rugs also can be taken outside and squirted with a hose to wash away heavier dirt or stains.

When the primal urge to redecorate threatens to overtake your own good senses, avoid the desire to chuck everything in the room and start from scratch.  Instead, try one or more of these easy and affordable decor pick-me-ups.  You might find that a small change or two is all that you need to feel satisfied again with your home.

Green Energy – For the Planet AND the Pocketbook

Energy Saving Green Logo
“Going Green” is a trend that is gaining momentum every year and has become a lifestyle choice for many Americans. Not only does it allow you to do your part in conserving our precious resources, but it can also save you hundreds of dollars a year in utility costs. Making small changes can yield huge differences. Replacing just one regular light bulb in your home with an energy-efficient light bulb will reduce that outlet’s energy consumption by 75% and save you up to $40 a year! Imagine the difference that you can make if you replace all of the bulbs in your home. Another important energy-saving tip is to make sure that your doors and window are properly sealed. Drafts and broken seals can waste hundreds of dollars a year in heating and cooling cost and waste unnecessary energy. You will also want to make sure that you are using energy-efficient appliances. Seventeen percent of your household energy is spent on large appliance operation (refrigerators, clothes washer and dryers, and dishwashers). If you are not using an EnergyStar certified appliance, consider upgrading. It will save you money in the long run.

Solar power is also a great way to save energy in and around your home. If you are not ready to install solar panels on your roof and rely solely on the sun, you can still implement small uses of solar power around your home. Consider using Chinese Solar Lanterns or Umbrella Solar Lanterns at you next outdoor party instead of traditional lighting sources. Add solar powered path lights to your driveway or sidewalk. Consider investing in solar swimming pool heaters in place of traditional heat sources for your pool.

Green power is here to stay. More and more people are realizing that making these small, but powerful, changes are a necessary step toward protecting our plant AND our pocketbooks. Start making your home energy-efficient today and you reap the benefits for many years to come.
